Volume formulas

Rectangular volume = length × width × height. Cylinder = π × (diameter ÷ 2)² × height.

Worked example

A box-shaped space measuring 2 m × 1.5 m × 0.8 m has a volume of 2.4 m³, equal to about 84.76 ft³, 3.14 yd³ or 2,400 liters.

  • All dimensions must represent the same internal or external boundary.
  • Irregular shapes should be divided into simpler solids.
  • The calculation is geometric and does not account for usable capacity or displacement.

Frequently asked questions

Is a cubic yard the same as a yard?

No. A yard measures length; a cubic yard measures volume. One cubic yard equals approximately 0.7646 cubic meters.

How many liters are in one cubic meter?

One cubic meter contains exactly 1,000 liters.

Can I calculate an irregular volume?

Split it into rectangular or cylindrical sections, calculate each section and add the results.
